P233B Mercury Sable code definition:
P233B is a kind of OBD-II Diagnostic P-Powertrain Diagnostic Trouble Code for Mercury Sable.

P233B Mercury Sable is described as Fuel System Too Rich, which basically means bank 1's oxygen sensor has detected a rich condition of fuel. This means there's not enough oxygen in the exhaust from too much fuel being delivered into the air and gas mixture for combusion. There are two wires dedicated for each coil; one is battery feed which usually comes from the distribution center, and the other one for the coil driver circuit from the PCM. The PCM grounds or ungrounds the circuit to activate or deactivate the coil.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P233B Mercury Sable diagnostic trouble code may include:
Place of P233B in engine

Possible Causes :

  • A large vacuum leak would cause a massive amount of un-metered air to enter the intake manifold resulting in an overly lean mixture.
  • Faulty IMRC actuator/sensor
  • A plugged converter will cause of host of driveability problems as well as set this code. A severely plugged converter will result in the inability to increase rpm when under load. Look for a code such as P0421 -- catalytic converter efficiency below threshold if the converter indicating a faulty converter.

Common Misdiagnoses

  1. IC Circuit High Voltage Problem
  2. Control Module Throttle Actuator Position Performance Problem
  3. Air Conditioning (A/C) Clutch Feedback Circuit High Voltage Problem
  4. Cruise Vehicle Speed/Set Speed Difference Too High Problem
  5. PCM Stack Overrun Problem

Repair Processes :

Look at the plug wires to make sure they are not burnt or laying on the exhaust. If the scan tool has that capability, and the scan tool can operate the IMRC valves, then the problem is either resolved and a simple code clearing is all that's left or a new PCM would be called for. Look for damage to the tank indicating impact that may have damaged the fuel pump or sender.
